I just chatted with Markosias and he and Pestt are on a homebrew pirate server that runs an old private copy of DAOC. I looked up the official DAOC, and the biggest downside is that they are *still* charging $15 a month for the game, which technically is still being supported (the latest patch notes from April 2016 indicate they are adding named bosses to a lot of the world dungeons).

One thing I am keeping an eye out for is Camelot Unchained, but I don't know anything concrete about it other than the ppl making it are the same creative team who did DAOC.

Hi Sven,

I might be interested in trying DAOC.  As far as I know Marko is playing, and I don't which server he might be on.  Any particulars on downloading and server choice?  I kind of miss kicking around with the kin, so if DAOC is where we're at, I'd give it a try.

To be honest, I don't have a great response to your question Jariath; a lot of videos and statements on their site appear to emphasize PvP, but I think there is a possibility this is a matter of interpretation. I know/knew Mark Jacobs and the Mythic guys personally back when Mythic was a tiny company, and I was one of their volunteer beta testers. I think he's intelligent and passionate enough to be able to blend his own desire for a niche game with something that has mass appeal, and mass appeal is how you pay the bills. Mark Jacobs has at least two MMORPG's under his belt, both of which peaked and declined, so he has experience with trying to keep an MMORPG alive.

That being said, you could be right, guess we can see when it becomes playable =P

I know I personally don't have interest in the new one, at least as I have read the goals and aspirations of the developers. A pure PVP game with no PVE elements is not something that appeals to me. Is there anything that points to more than this in the game?

LLorek just reminded me that the creative team behind DAOC actually left EA Mythic and have been pursuing their own vision of what DAOC should be independently. A game called "Camelot Unchained" is close to release and has been in development for over 4 years. It was successfully kickstarted as well backed by traditional means.

This could be another alternative to picking up a DAOC account, as it's basically DAOC++.

I wanted to let everyone know I am open to trying out Dark Age of Camelot again. As the last big pre-WOW MMORPG, I played it from 2001 to 2004 before I quit. Because it's pre-WOW, it had a ton of retro-ness that I liked, but a few things that I didn't. For example (some of this may be out of date since the game is 15 years old):

- No group finders, you had to basically make friends by bumping into them in the world at large

- No instances, groups were made dynamically from people who were camping various spawns in various dungeons

- No real bosses so to speak, bosses required large numbers of players rather than the elaborate scripted affairs they are now. This may have changed, as a news item referred to some new bosses in some dungeons

I was going to make a new character and keep my old ones for the money and just in case we need a big character to kill someone. I think Markosias may be already playing on/off, and I wanted to ask what server he was on for housing instance purposes, since we need to be on the same server to visit each other's houses. If not, I was going to propose YWAIN#4 as a server since it's recommended for new players and they are all basically the same.

Finally, I asked Ark and Allihandra this question a while ago, and all three of us were Midgard leaning, so I wanted to check if anyone else has a total love for another realm before we start shooting each other with arrows.
