re: Svesson's Rift Maxims

This is how I view leading groups and raids. I wanted to post this for discussion, but also share why I organize things the way I do.

1. Sometimes we can fail even when we succeed

Quote:
Just because we beat something, doesn't mean we did it right. We should learn even from our successes.

Sometimes we manage to win despite doing everything wrong. We will find encounters that are harder than anything that we have seen before and we should never be surprised that sometimes we need to improve on what "has always worked".

2. Gear is not everything

Quote:
Your skill rotation will have a larger impact than gear on whether you are successful in your role.

Having higher stats obviously helps, but using the right skill rotation has a larger impact on whether you succeed or fail on the hardest of battles. Don't be afraid to look at your rotation and think about tweaking it, it will probably make a much larger difference than saving up another 200 plaques to buy more T2 gear.

3. Skill rotations are like tricks, use the right one for the job

Quote:
Get used to changing your rotations to adapt to the circumstances.

Just because we normally succeed in encounters does not mean our rotations are perfect. Look for ways to improve or modify your skill rotations, especially if we are doing well and suddenly wipe.

4. Be the best you can be

Quote:
Have at least one specialized role that excels at its purpose. Two is better.

One of the fastest ways to build a group that has difficulties is to have everyone be a hybrid. It's OK to have one support build, but everyone gets along better by having specialized roles that are the best at what they do. One amazing tank, one amazing healer, at least two amazing DPS. Do not compromise tanking builds for DPS, do not compromise healing builds for DPS, and do not compromise DPS builds by making a glass cannon (remember, dead ppl do no damage or healing).

5. Trust your team

Quote:
Believe in your team; talk about what went wrong and give them the time to learn from it. Changing things too quick stops everyone from learning.

If you wipe, don't worry about being stuck in the group from hell. As a guild we always set time limits on how much we want to stay in an encounter we cannot beat. But what is important is not to overreact; this is a learning opportunity to build a better team. It's important we do not waste it by constantly changing everything at once and not learning anything at all. Stick with it; you will not only give your members a chance to improve their play, but you will also learn exactly why you wiped. That is worth more to the guild in the long-run than just another boss kill.
